How to Get More Google Reviews (and Why They Matter for SEO)

Google reviews influence both your local rankings and whether customers choose you. Here's a simple, ethical system to earn more of them consistently.

For any business that serves customers locally, Google reviews do two jobs at once: they help you rank in the local map pack, and they convince searchers to pick you over a competitor. Getting more of them is one of the highest-return things a local business can do.

Why reviews matter so much

They influence local rankings. The quantity, quality, recency and even the wording of your reviews are signals Google uses to decide who appears in the local three-pack. More genuine, recent reviews generally means better local visibility.

They win the click. When two businesses sit side by side in the results, the one with more and better reviews almost always gets chosen. A strong review profile is often the deciding factor between a call and a scroll-past.

A simple system to earn more reviews

The best approach is consistent and low-effort, built into how you already work:

  • Just ask — at the right moment. The best time is right after you’ve delivered a good result, while the customer is happy. A quick, personal “would you mind leaving us a Google review?” works far better than hoping people do it unprompted.
  • Make it one tap. Send a direct link to your Google review form by text or email. Every extra step loses people. Google Business Profile gives you a short review link you can share.
  • Build it into your process. Add the request to your job-completion email, invoice, or follow-up message so it happens every time, not just when you remember.
  • Respond to every review. Thank people for positive ones and respond calmly and helpfully to negative ones. It shows you’re engaged, and Google notices the activity.

What not to do

Never buy reviews or post fake ones — Google detects and penalises this, and it can get your profile suspended. Don’t offer payment or discounts in exchange for reviews, which breaches Google’s policies. Genuine reviews from real customers are the only ones worth having, and the only ones that hold up.

Reviews are part of local SEO, not separate from it

Reviews work best alongside a fully optimised Google Business Profile and the rest of your local SEO — consistent business details, the right categories, local content and citations. Together they decide whether you show up when nearby customers search.
