SEO Red Flags: How to Spot Bad SEO Before It Costs You

Not all SEO is good SEO — some can actively harm your site. Here are the warning signs of low-quality or risky SEO, and what trustworthy SEO looks like instead.

SEO done well is one of the best investments a business can make. SEO done badly can waste your money — or worse, get your site penalised by Google and set you back months. If you’re paying for SEO, or about to, here are the warning signs to watch for.

Promises no honest provider can make

“Guaranteed #1 rankings.” Nobody controls Google’s algorithm, so nobody can guarantee a specific position for a competitive term. This promise is the clearest sign of a provider to avoid.

“Results in days.” Real SEO compounds over months. Anything promising instant page-one results is usually paid ads relabelled as SEO, or risky shortcuts that don’t last.

Tactics that can get you penalised

Some “SEO” actively breaks Google’s guidelines and puts your site at risk:

  • Buying links in bulk. Spammy, paid link schemes are a fast way to a Google penalty. Safe link building is slow, relevant and earned. (See how to get backlinks.)
  • Keyword stuffing. Cramming keywords into pages until they read badly hurts both users and rankings.
  • Duplicate or spun content. Mass-produced, near-identical pages (old-style “doorway” pages) are exactly what Google’s spam systems target.
  • Hidden text or cloaking. Showing Google something different from what users see is a direct violation.

If an agency is vague about how they build links or create content, assume the worst until they can explain it clearly.

The quieter red flags

  • No clear reporting. If you can’t see what’s being done or what’s improving, you can’t tell if you’re getting value.
  • Overseas, high-volume, cut-price work. SEO done properly takes real hours from people who understand your market. Bargain pricing usually buys automated, low-quality work.
  • Long lock-in contracts. These protect the agency, not you. Month-to-month keeps a provider accountable to results.

What trustworthy SEO looks like

Good SEO is transparent and patient: clear about what it does, focused on genuine quality, reported in plain English, and confident enough not to lock you in. It follows Google’s guidelines because that’s what actually holds up over time.

That’s how we work at SEO Centre — Australian-owned, all work done in-house, no lock-in contracts, and honest monthly reporting. If you’re unsure whether your current SEO is helping or hurting, ask us for a free audit and we’ll give you a straight assessment.
