How to do an SEO audit (free checklist)

A step-by-step SEO audit you can run on your own site to find what's holding your rankings back — and what to fix first.

An SEO audit is a health check of your website — finding the issues stopping it from ranking. Here’s a practical version you can run yourself.

1. Check indexing

Search site:yourdomain.com.au in Google. Roughly the right number of pages showing? Good. Far too few (or none) means an indexing problem. Set up Google Search Console to see exactly what’s indexed.

2. Review on-page basics

Spot-check key pages for unique title tags, meta descriptions, one clear H1, and content that matches what searchers want. Our on-page checklist covers this in detail.

3. Test speed and mobile

Run key pages through PageSpeed Insights. Check Core Web Vitals and confirm the site works well on a phone.

4. Audit the technical layer

Look for broken links (404s), missing or messy redirects, HTTPS issues, and whether you have a valid XML sitemap. See our technical SEO checklist.

5. Assess content and keywords

Are you targeting the keywords your customers actually search? Is there a page for each core service? Is content genuinely helpful, or thin?

6. Check authority

Review your backlink profile. Quality links from relevant sites help; spammy ones can hurt — see how to get backlinks safely.

7. Local SEO (if relevant)

Is your Google Business Profile claimed and optimised? Are your business details consistent everywhere?
